Why the best summer beauty routine isn't a different one — just a lighter one.
Summer always changes my routine. Once my teenagers are off school, the rhythm of our days shifts almost overnight — different hours, plans that change by the hour, snacks to buy, rides to organize, and the same question every morning: "What are we doing today?"
I suspect a lot of you can relate, whether it's young children home for the summer, grandchildren visiting, or simply a calendar that looks nothing like it does in October. The structure we've built all year loosens a little, and that's part of the magic. I try to be present and enjoy the change.
My beauty routine changes too. I'm simply less interested in spending twenty minutes getting ready. I'd rather be outside walking Bella, or enjoying a coffee on the patio, or making the most of a sunny day. I still want to feel polished and confident — I just want it to feel effortless.
Which is what made me realize: the best summer beauty routine isn't necessarily a different routine. It's simply a lighter one.
There's something freeing about editing down. Ten products become six. Six become four. Without really deciding to, we start reaching for whatever feels easiest and lightest on the skin.
Easier doesn't mean less polished, though. When skin feels hydrated and comfortable, makeup tends to look more natural — features stay soft, skin keeps its movement, and there's less time spent fixing, blending, and touching up throughout the day. That's why summer beauty rarely feels like transformation. It feels like refinement. Healthy-looking skin, a touch of colour in the cheeks, defined lashes, hydrated lips — that's usually all it takes.
It reflects a broader shift in beauty, too — away from routines built around correction, toward routines built around enhancement. Rather than asking makeup to create a different face, we're asking it to help us look like ourselves, only a little more rested.
The Routine
For me, that starts with Luminous Face Primer for a fresh, hydrated base, then Dew Beauty Benefit Cream, which softens unevenness while still letting real skin show through. A touch of Glow Cheek & Lip Stain brings warmth back into the complexion without ever looking overdone. And then, always, a swipe of Moisturizing Lip Gloss — the one step I never skip, summer or otherwise. Soft, hydrated lips have a way of making a whole look feel finished.
Then comes the most important step: stopping. Summer is a good reminder that beauty isn't always about adding one more product — sometimes it's about knowing when enough is enough.
Five minutes may not sound like much. But a shorter routine makes room for something better — a slower morning, another cup of coffee, a walk with Bella, or just getting out the door without overthinking the mirror.
Because sometimes glow isn't coming from makeup at all. Sometimes it comes from feeling comfortable enough to leave a little of yourself untouched
